Obituary

William Jackson Wood was born December 30, 1929, in Montgomery, Alabama to Chauncey Depew Wood and Eunice Nova Jackson Wood. Both his parents and his brother Chauncey Depew Wood Jr. precede him in death. He passed away on January 14, 2021. He married Sybella King Wood on June 6, 1953. She survived him for a few days, but went to be with him on January 17, 2021.

They are survived by their 5 children; William Jackson Wood Jr (Peggy), Sandra Wood Hutcherson, Nova Louise Wood Phillips, (Jon), Wendy Wood Radovic (James), and Leslie Wood Hancock (Derek); 11 grandchildren and 19 great grandchildren. They are both preceded in death by their great grandson Jonah Cannon Phillips.

“Jack” was a high school graduate from Sidney Lanier High School. He completed a two-year tour with the Army Air Corps, during the Korean War, where he was assigned to a communications unit. He attended Auburn University for a brief time while working for Alabama Power with a tree crew.

In 1958, upon accepting a job at Chemstrand, he and his family relocated to the Pensacola area. He worked as a Lab Technician for 29 years and he retired from Monsanto / Solutia in 1985. In his 35 years of retirement, he enjoyed travel, painting, knife making, rock collecting, bird watching, and was an avid photographer and videographer of his family.

He was an obedient son, loving husband, outstanding father, and the proud patriarch of his wonderful family. He will be missed by all who knew him.

Sybella King Wood was born in Selma, Alabama on March 18, 1934, to Arthur Trenton King and Mary Louise Persons King, who precede her in death. She went to be with her husband of 67 years, William Jackson Wood Jr, on January 17, 2021.

As an only child, she had many cousins and double first cousins who were considered her “siblings,” and were all dearly loved by her.

She attended Alabama Christian School in Montgomery, Alabama, and worked as a dental hygienist after school until she met Jack and started a family. She enjoyed being a home maker to their 5 children. She was active in their school, church and extracurricular activities. She was active with Montclair Elementary School PTA from 1961-1961 and Woodham High School from 1971-1983. Sybella had a passion for fine china, and collected depression glass. She was an active member with the City of Five Flags Depression Glass Club for many years and until 2020. She was a long time member of Gateway Church of Christ.

She was an amazing woman. She had a place at her table and a room for all of her guests. She was a role model to many. She never met a stranger. To know her was to be know that you were loved by her.

Visitation for Jack & Sybella will be 10:00 a.m. Thursday, January 21, 2021 at Waters & Hibbert Funeral Home LLC with services at 11:00 a.m. Officiating will be Derek Hancock. There will be a live stream of the services on the "Photos & Videos" of each Jack and Sybella's web page.

WATERS & HIBBERT FUNERAL HOME LLC is in charge of arrangements.
