Virginia "Jean" Girdner was called home to be with the Lord on July 21, 2020 due to complications with her heart. She was born on September 30, 1931 in Covington County, Alabama. She was an active and faithful member of Gateway Church of Christ for over 40 years.

Jean owned and operated the Giles and Girdner Insurance Agency representing GEICO Insurance company in Pensacola with her partner Olen Giles for most of her life. She was an avid member of The Pilot Club of Pensacola since 1971 where she served as President as well other offices and as Chaplain and served on many other committees. She was also the Pilot Sweetheart one year. She was also a member of the Insurance Women of Pensacola for many years where she served on various committees and offices.

Jean was the link that connected the extended family during her retirement. Not only her children but all her nieces, nephews and cousins, called and visited for advice and sharing of family news and celebrations. She had many friends and she loved to get together with some of them to play dominoes often. Jean was always there for friends and family in good times and difficult times. She was a devoted mother and grandmother. She shared everything she had with everyone she loved. She always remembered everybody's favorite dish and provided it when you came to visit or brought it when she visited you. She also remembered everyone's birthday with a card or a call. Her laughter was contagious and she could always see the joy in everything. You could always count on Jean to make you laugh and she knew how to make everyone feel loved and supported.
Her love of language was demonstrated by her poetry and her quick wit. Jean was treasured by her family and all her many friends.

She was preceded in death by her mother, Bama Parish Tillery and her father, Frank Tillman Kirkland; brothers, Calvin Ruesaw "Tynce" and Walter Mack Kirkland; sisters, Ruedene Best (Montgomery), Syble Joan Cawyer (Texas), and Charlotte Kirkland Lewis (Dothan).

Jean is survived by her loving daughter Jennifer Koppel (husband Bobby) of Panama City, and devoted son Alan (wife Deborah) of Pensacola. She was a proud and devoted grandmother to Jason Moulder (wife Lori) of Panama City and Melissa Acarregui of Pensacola and great grandmother to Cole and Brynlee Moulder of Panama City and Sebastian Berry and Alexander Acarregui of Pensacola. Other survivors include a host of nieces and nephews, great nieces and great nephews.

There will be a live stream of the Funeral Services at Waters and Hibbert Funeral Home website on Tuesday, July 28 at 11:00 a.m. Officiating the services will be Minister Jeremy Kughn.

Jean always put God first in her life and she raised her children to do the same. She knew where she was going and she was ready to go.

My heartfelt condolences to Jennifer, Alan and families. God bless you all.
I met Jean, when I went to work for her at Geico (Giles & Girdner). She was a wonderful boss, mentor, and person. I was truly
blessed to have worked for her and gained a special friendship with her, after the office closed. She and Mr. Giles and Paulette Dutton, got me into eating "Southern cooking", and it took a bit but, when we had our weekly lunch together, I learned a lot about the South. ( I am from NY). It was wonderful to hear her stories about her children Jennifer and Alan, and all the grandchildren, and she talked about her sisters, and her friends from the "Pilot" group. I will never, ever, forget her kindness, loving nature, she was giving and cared for everyone. And the last time we talked, when she was in the hospital, I was in town and made a point to see her, she told me and my husband, "that she was ready to go", she new her time was coming and she was ready. God has just gained another beautiful Angel, and we will always have memories of a wonderful woman.
Until we meet again Jean.

Jean was always wise, witty, wonderful and often so feisty! How she loved her family and her friends and how happy I am to have been in that beautiful sisterhood of friendship! Oh, how we will miss this precious woman! All my love to Jennifer and Alan and the whole family she loved so dearly!

Jean was my loving aunt, but she was much more than just and aunt. My mother passed when I was 20 years old and Jean became like a second mother to me. She was always there to listen no matter the situation, was always supportive and encouraging, and when necessary caution me when I made bad choices. I spent a lot of nights in her home and she always welcomed me. We were so alike in many ways that sometimes it was almost scary. We often spent hour after hour playing cards and talking. I shared many things with her that I would not tell anyone else because I knew that I could trust her. I will never forget her and I feel so honored to have been a part of her life. I love you and miss you so much Jean.
