Obituary

Martha Snyder Miller, age 102, passed away on Dec 31, 2017.      She was born March 15, 1915 in Montgomery, to immigrant parents from Russia. She was one of six sisters, whose ties remained close all their lives. She moved from New York City to Pensacola in 1947. She and her beloved husband Irving, ran Miller Star Foods, a corner grocery on Belmont and Reus St. After the store closed, she worked at Sam's Style Shop and the Oxford Shop. For the last 12 years of her life, she was lucky to choose Wesley Haven Villa as her home. Up to a day before her death she was mentally alert, supporting friends and family with her wisdom and humor. Martha was the oldest living member of B’nai Israel synagogue, where she was famed for her strudel and mandel bread recipes. Many synagogue children learned to make challah and do hand sewing from Grandma Martha. She recently taught knitting to a group of girls from the Pensacola Christian College. Some of her many volunteer commitments were at Sacred Heart Hospital, Manna Food Bank, and AARP. She went to Tallahassee and met the governor when she received a Volunteer of the Year award  She leaves behind many friends in the Pensacola community. We give special thanks to Jennifer Colley (director of Wesley Haven Villa), Dr. Amos Prevatt, Joe and Faye Rosenbaum, and Myra and Nathan Kahn for many years of support and love. She has been a role model for a life based on giving and receiving love. Family members include Roslyn (Miller) Bendet (Irwin), Susan (Miller) Pankowicz,( Eric Krieger), grandchildren David Bendet(Cathy) Bess Bendet( Kristin Rothballer) , Lisa Butler (Brian), and great-grandchildren Christian, Lauren, Caleb and Grace Butler. Martha's nieces and nephews, as well as everyone who called her "Grandma Martha”, or just plain Martha should know how much she loved them. Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday, January 2, at Waters and Hibbert Funeral Home,  followed by burial at B'nai Israel Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Methodist Homes Fountain of Love, or B'nai Israel synagogue. WATERS & HIBBERT FUNERAL HOME is in charge of arrangements.

She was our Grandma. She was everyone's Grandma. When my wife, Cathy, first asked her what she should call her, she said just call me Grandma. Other children and young adults called her "Grandma" too. We didn't mind sharing because she had plenty of love for everyone. She created such deep relationships within this community, from Synagogue to Wesley Haven, family and friends, we all shared in the love and memories that she gave us. ~ David Bendet, San Francisco, California

Herb Rubin,

Always smiling and cheerful, Martha Miller was comfortable with, and lent comfort to, people of all ages. Although almost 20 years my senior, Martha always felt like a contemporary. She could hold forth on timely topics and philosophy as well, and managed to charm her listeners with her attentiveness and social ease. She was truly an institution who will be truly missed. ~ Herb Rubin, Sanibel, Florida

Sincere condolence to the Miller family. While words fail to capture the pain of losing your beloved Martha, you can look forward to the time when words will fail to capture the joy of having our Heavenly Father return your dear one soon. Psalm 146:4, Isaiah 30:18. In the meantime, may our Heavenly Father, and cherished memories strengthen you to cope at this time. ~ Leonie B, Alex, Virginia Contact Me
