Obituary

Helen Gibson Arthur was born on December 17, 1919 in Traders Hill, Georgia. She went to be with God on October 21, 2017 at the age of 97. She lived a full life that positively impacted the lives of many. Helen was predeceased by many beloved family members. They include her parents, Mamie and Owen Gibson; husband, James Arthur; brother Hubert Gibson; sister, Kathleen Corbett; sons, James “Bo” Arthur, Jr. and Charles Arthur; and grandson, Alan Arthur. Helen was lovingly known as Grandmom to her grandchildren and numerous friends, and MomMom to her great grandchildren. It can truly be said that she loved life and enjoyed her time with these young ones. Grandmom’s laugh was contagious, and she was always up for an adventure including theme parks, sailing, fishing, hiking, singing, shopping, staying up late, and storytelling. Her grandchildren all loved their time with her. They always begged to visit, and often did for extended periods of time. Helen is survived by her daughters, Gwen Nelson (Chuck) and Fran Johns (Leonard); sons, Robert Arthur (Joan) and Steve Arthur (Elaine). She is also survived by eight grandchildren, Brian, Joelle, Erin, Shannon, Allen, Corinne, Billy, and Monica, as well as 11 great-grandchildren. Helen’s devotion to the Lord was evident in all she did, and she served as a shining example of God’s love to her family and friends. Throughout her life, she took great pleasure in serving those in need, in particular, the elderly. She provided meals, transportation, companionship and numerous other services. She was dedicated to attending weekly worship services, and loved participating in the Ladies’ Bible Class until she was no longer able. Not only was this time part of her close relationship with God, but she also enjoyed the fellowship of her church family, especially the covered dish luncheons and other church socials! Heartfelt appreciation goes out to the Bay Breeze Senior Living Center. Many staff members loved Helen and made her last few years as happy as possible. Thank you for all you did for her! Helen’s family and friends will celebrate her life on November 24, 2017. There will be a visitation with continental breakfast at 9:30 at Gulf Breeze Church of Christ, located at 2962 Gulf Breeze Pkwy, Gulf Breeze, FL., 32563, followed by a memorial service at 10:30. Helen will be interred at Barrancas National Cemetery, joining her beloved husband James. The family asks that the interment remain private. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial donations be made to either of the following: Mount Dora Children’s Home, 301 W. 13 th Ave, Mt Dora, FL 32757 ( https://www.mdchome.org) or The Starfish Project, 1762 Sea Lark Lane, Navarre, FL 32566 ( http://thestarfishprojectnwfl.org) Helen lived well, loved much, and laughed often! She will be greatly missed by her family and friends. WATERS & HIBBERT FUNERAL HOME is in charge of arrangements.
