Deana Sue Grimm Jones, 81, passed away on March 4, 2021 surrounded by her family.
Deana was the daughter of Richard Dean Grimm and Cordelia Huffman Grimm in Bartlesville, Oklahoma. Her family, with sister Peggy, moved to Omaha Nebraska where she graduated from Westside High School. She was highly active in the Omaha Playhouse starring as Maggie in the Tennessee Williams' play “Cat on a Hot Tin Roof”. She then attended the University of Kansas where she received a B.A. in Nursing and was a member of Alpha Delta Pi sorority. She spent a year at University College, London where she established lifelong friendships. Following graduation, she was a staff nurse at the Omaha VA Hospital.

At the VA hospital she met her future husband, Dr. Jimmy E. Jones. They were married in Omaha by his brother, the Rev. Bob G. Jones. Taking up residency in Boston, she taught nursing at the Boston VA Hospital and Boston University Hospital. Deana and Jimmy moved to Pensacola, FL in 1972 when Dr. Jones began his pediatric surgery practice.

Deana was active in the Junior League of Boston and Pensacola. In Pensacola she served as President and received the Joan Gonzalez Award in 2006. She also was the Area 3 Council Representative for The Association of Junior Leagues International Inc. She was an active member of Christ Church Episcopal, the Pensacola Symphony Board and Guild, Fiesta of Five Flags, Merry Makers, and multiple Mardi Gras groups. She and Jimmy were among the founding parents of Creative Learning Center, now named the Creative Learning Academy.

Deana was passionate for her community and instilled in her family a strong sense of civic duty. Deana and Jim were known for their gracious hosting of many parties in their home in North Hill. Her creativity for entertaining was a gift she shared often not just for family but also for organizations and causes she was passionate about. From hosting Symphony receptions to her favorite Jones Family Caroling Party, she made everyone feel welcome as if they were the guest of honor. Deana never met a stranger. Her humor broke most barriers, and her friendships were lifelong. Her laughter was contagious, and even if you had no idea of what she was laughing about, you laughed anyway.

Deana was a devoted wife, mother, and grandmother. Her faith in God was always present. She led by example. Her family will be forever grateful for her continued love and support. She never wavered in her fierce love of her family.

Deana is survived by Jimmy, her husband of 55 years; her daughters, Susannah Jones (daughters Helen and Elizabeth) and Meredith Jones (children Maggie and Matthew); her son, Michael and his wife, Tara (daughters Lola and Ellis); Chuong Vu and his wife Melissa (daughters Noelle, Lilianna, Emma, and Bella).

The family would like to thank the caring hospice nurses and staff of Covenant Care.

Due to COVID-19, a memorial service and celebration of life will be held at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, the family wishes for donations to be made to your favorite charity.

Although I lived in Pensacola for only a couple of years, I have very fond memories of Michael's mom, Deana Jones. She welcomed me to revisit and stay with you all for a couple of summers, and although it has been over thirty years, I am still grateful of her hospitality and generosity. I just wanted to contribute my thoughts to share the long lasting impact of her kindness. Lodovico

I just learned of Deana's death, Jimmy. She was such an outstanding woman--a valuable, loveable role model. Michael and I have wonderful memories of her (and you and your family) at your lively Christmas parties back in the day. These are precious memories, which we will keep forever. Bless you and your family. Fondly, Alicia and Michael

To all the Jones family, you know how dear you are to me. My first memory of Deana came on the day we painted the mural on the wall at CLC. It was our first gathering as a school. Deana was holding baby Michael in one arm and a paintbrush in the other, and kids were running everywhere. It was a joyous occasion. Every year Dale and I looked forward to the Jones Caroling Party with little kids singing on the "stage," adults sharing punch and laughter, and everyone joining in the singing. Deana was kind, strong, smart, determined, protective, and loving. Her legacy is huge. I know your grief is also. May memories fill your mind and heart and help you through this time. Love, Sandy Vinson Ryland
