Obituary

Carolyn Schang, age 97, went to be with her Lord on March 22, 2021. She lived in the Pensacola area for nearly 70 years.

Carolyn Wanda Kern was born in Detroit, Michigan on May 4, 1923. She was the daughter of Kenneth Campbell Kern and Bettina Brandt Kern. She married Jacob Stephen Schang in Detroit on November 23, 1940. Carolyn and Jake began their family in Detroit before moving south to “God’s country” in the early 1950s. They initially lived in Lillian, Alabama and then Pensacola before building their “country paradise” in Beulah in 1964.

Carolyn was a devoted wife and mother, and loved raising her children. As they grew up, she became a foster mother for the State of Florida. Over the next thirty years Carolyn cared for close to one hundred foster children. In her eighties, she still enjoyed volunteering at Beulah Elementary School. Even in her final year, Carolyn would light up when she saw or touched a child. Her passion for children was exceeded only by her love for her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. She was a lifelong Lutheran and active in her church.

Carolyn is survived by her children: Steven (Patricia) Schang, Susan Schang, Arthur (Venetta) Schang, Carolyn (Mark) Baker, John Paul Schang, and Mary Elizabeth Schang. She was abundantly blessed with 18 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by Jacob, her husband of 61 years; her parents; and her brothers Lorimer and Phillip McCallister.

Funeral services will be held at Resurrection Lutheran Church on Thursday, March 25, 2021 at 11:00 AM with Pastor Nathan Ragazinskas officiating. Visitation will begin at the church at 10:00 AM. Burial will immediately follow the service at Eastern Gate Memorial Gardens. A live stream of the funeral services will start at 10:50 a.m.

Memorial contributions to honor Carolyn’s life can be made to Resurrection Lutheran Church, where she and her husband were founding members.
